Summary

Imagine a workplace where every research request you receive takes into account what your organization already knows. Product teams have the answers to common UX questions at their fingertips, and finding insights has become second nature to everyone. You rarely wonder whether the insights you find are still true because other researchers are always adding new evidence that supports them. In this session we discuss HITS, the human insight library Microsoft uses internally to achieve these goals, and the culture we’ve been working to develop around its use.

Key Insights

  • HITs is designed to facilitate immediate access to insights rather than just reports.

  • The importance of maintaining a continuous, adaptive body of knowledge.

  • Research should connect over time, suggesting a shift from isolated studies to integrated insights.

  • The notion of 'timeless research' focuses on developing durable knowledge that remains applicable over time.

  • HITs features a structured system, but is adaptable to different types of knowledge, allowing for both tactical and foundational insights.

  • Collaborative peer review within the system contributes to the durability of insights.

  • HITs connects individual observations, allowing for easy reference to past research and facilitating knowledge sharing across teams.

  • The power of leveraging technology to index insights makes information retrieval faster and more meaningful.

  • Democratizing access to knowledge helps mitigate potential misuse of research insights among stakeholders.

  • Ongoing updates and community feedback are crucial for keeping knowledge relevant in such a large organization.
